UNCAV in Bulgaria-Burgas
Whoever saves one human life saves the whole universe.
Mrs. Mag. phil. Zhurkov – member of UNCAV, was born in the city of Burgas and lived in Vienna from the time before the fall of the Iron Curtain. She is known in Austria as a true representative and popular of Bulgarian culture and media activity. As a result of her efforts, UNCAV received an invitation to Burgas from Alberta ALKALAY, chairman of the Alef organization, which works on the history of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during World War II.
On the agenda was of the meeting was the International Youth Literary Festival – „Friendship – Meaning and Salvation“.
The screening of the documentary by Elka Nikolova aroused great interest. The film is dedicated to the rescue of Bulgarian Jews, the moral strength and resilience of the people who decided to oppose the Holocaust. The documentary tells the story of three heroes whose childhood is spent in Bulgaria. Later, after their establishment in the Jewish community in New York, they learned about the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews, and this marked their entire life path and provoked the desire of considering what diverted them from the tragic end.
The last event was the visit to the island of St. Anastasia by ship.
The Solemn awarding ceremony was attended by Vice President of Bulgaria- Iliana IOTOVA, the Mayor of the City of Burgas- Dimitar NIKOLOV, the Austrian Ambassador to Bulgaria, Mag. Andrea IKIC-BÖHM, Kiril VALCHEV, General Director of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency /BTA/, Milen Mitev – Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) and Snezhana YOVEVA-Dimitrova – director of the State Cultural Institute under the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
