This Day was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly to mark the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp in 1945.<\/h6>\n<h6><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18451 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-2-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-2-768x444.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/h6>\n<h6>Today, the United Nations in Vienna solemnly observed the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. The event, held under the theme <em>&#8222;Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights,&#8220;<\/em> was organized by the Permanent Mission of Israel to the UN in Vienna and the United Nations Information Service (UNIS), with the support of the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme, in cooperation with the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Vienna.<\/h6>\n<h6><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18452 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-3-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-3-768x443.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/h6>\n<h6>The commemoration began with the viewing of the exhibitions: <em>&#8222;Auschwitz &#8211; A Place on Earth: The Auschwitz Album&#8220;<\/em> and <em>&#8222;Lest We Forget.&#8220;<\/em> These exhibits served as powerful visual testaments to the atrocities of the Holocaust and as reminders of the importance of remembrance and education in preventing such horrors from occurring again.<\/h6>\n<h6>The solemn ceremony featured remarks from distinguished speakers, including:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h6>Ms. Ghada Waly, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV),<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6>H.E. Ambassador David Roet, Permanent Representative of Israel to the UN in Vienna,<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6>Mr. Howard Solomon, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Vienna,<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6>Ms. Dina Porat, Senior Academic Adviser at Yad Vashem, and<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6>Holocaust Survivor Mr. Dirk \u201cDicky\u201d Adler, who shared his moving testimony of resilience and survival.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>The ceremony also included a heartfelt prayer by Chief Cantor Shmuel Barzilai and a musical performance by Israeli soprano Miriam Hajiyeva, accompanied by pianist Almog Aharon, which added a reflective dimension to the occasion.<\/h6>\n<h6>UNIS Officer-in-Charge\/Deputy to the Director, Ms Sonja Wintersberger, moderated the program with grace and solemnity, emphasizing the need to honour the memory of the victims and to uphold human rights and dignity for all.<\/h6>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18453 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-4-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-4-694x1024.jpg 694w, https:\/\/uncav-vienna.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Victims-4-768x1134.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Following the commemoration, attendees were invited to a screening of the award-winning 2023 documentary &#8222;UnBroken&#8220; by filmmaker Beth Lane. The film chronicles the seven Weber siblings who evaded certain capture and death, and ultimately escaped Nazi Germany following their mother\u2019s incarceration and murder at Auschwitz. After being hidden in a laundry hut by a benevolent farmer, the children spent two years on their own in wartorn Germany. Emboldened by their father\u2019s mandate that they \u2018always stay together,\u2019 the children used their own cunning and instincts to fight through hunger, loneliness, rape, bombings and fear. Their journey culminates with a painful ultimatum, when, separated from their father, they are told that they must declare themselves as orphans in order to escape to a new life in America. Unbeknownst to them, this salvation would become what would finally tear them apart, not to be reunited for another 40 years.The film, which highlights stories of resilience and the enduring impact of Holocaust survivors, left a profound impression on all present.(<a href=\"https:\/\/bethlane.com\/unbroken\">UnBroken: Would You Hide Me? \u2014 UnBroken: Would You Hide Me?<\/a>)<\/h6>\n<h6>International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaustunderscores the United Nations&#8216; commitment to promoting Holocaust remembrance and combating antisemitism, racism, and all forms of discrimination.
