This partnership with Anglo American will help us to maximize impact and scale up interventions.\u201d<\/h6>\n<h6>CEO of Anglo American\u2019s Crop Nutrients business Tom McCulley said: \u201cOur research partnership with the IAEA is a perfect example of our purpose in action \u2013 we are re-imagining mining to improve people\u2019s lives. Such practices can benefit farm economics and the environment alike.<\/h6>\n<h6>Climate change, poor farming practices, sea water intrusion and land use changes, threaten the world\u2019s soil by salinization \u2013 the increasing amount of salt content in soil \u2013 which subsequently leads to a breakdown of soil function. Globally, it is estimated that 932 million hectares of soils are salt-affected, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rCwwsMmFjHFKUv1rDtAAW-2B5jrLrQ4JvAn3Gqb5bQuwe3jypz-2BjLen1zhhrb1ZxFU6HOUYuAYTUFXIEY0qkvQ5BzI-3D-DPd_-2BF8w-2FXv7J6wBhlqty06-2FA9Lz-2BGL6T49iNrWbqUMCVz3aWA7u7g-2F-2BVMDOnVRPudt-2BFb9YHBqaDWNGVlaGpzhw92B2d67UQ-2Fy-2BlPntkO8KO2IMZxeFfavH9vdVXLL6Tha-2FkxX8st85q5eMksE6aqg4FkSWQZsMScC2mBniSu7rqKKkYPZzl2GImnWVZZss2i5HsJYBLc1dE035-2FwLFX5mtMJp1AXhrA-2Bc8jwaAKWx10TwDvpZpnpGfBz3v8ek-2FRKV4lRa-2FmmW7mbMYEay6xRzTLDgTUBKRNrmmyK5BY4a0-2Bw7HqUjP1C7mV182-2FDxl0i1ROZlPi5ycC0QzYN5W6XqHlLTWuoiU8Sh0-2Fuxm8HGTFNo-3D\">Guideline for Salinity Assessment, Mitigation and Adaptation Using Nuclear and Related Techniques<\/a>.<\/h6>\n<h6>One of the main objectives of the five-year research project is to measure and compare the benefits and effectiveness of applying polyhalite mineral and other commercially available soil additives to reclaim salt-affected soils, enhance crop productivity and quality under changing climate, and understand nutrient release and dynamics.<\/h6>\n<h6>\u201cPolyhalite has a major role to play, and we are currently developing a mine in the UK to access the world\u2019s largest known deposit,\u201d CEO McCulley said. \u201cSoil degradation and salinity is an enormous and underappreciated problem, and I congratulate the FAO and the IAEA for their leadership on this critical issue, and we look forward to making a real difference through our collaboration.\u201d<\/h6>\n<h6>Polyhalite is a naturally occurring mineral containing the nutrients potassium, sulphur, magnesium and calcium. Anglo American is currently developing the Woodsmith Project in the northeast of England to access the world\u2019s largest known deposit of polyhalite as a source of environmentally friendly soil fertilizers. Research is required to understand the full potential of this complex mineral. The IAEA, through the Joint FAO\/IAEA Centre, has extensive experience and expertise in the use of isotopic techniques to trace the dissolution and movement of nutrients in soils.
