Mr. President,
\nCongratulations on an Olympic Games Opening Ceremony that left the confines of a stadium to showcase the beauty of Paris. The City of Light shone brightly. Some moments were moving and sumptuous.
\nNevertheless, several parts of the ceremony are to be deplored. Madame Anne Descamps, Paris 2024’s communications director, apologized after international and national remonstrances.
\n– The Olympic ideal („higher, stronger, faster – together“) is incompatible with an aesthetic of female decapitation. Recently, France, home of human rights, condemned all terrorist beheadings, even more so after the beheading of Samuel Paty. Let’s abolish any apology for terror, even more so that of the State, as Robert Badinter would have done. Global audiences, often families, want to celebrate life raised by flame, not shortened by iron. Honoring Olympe de Gouges as a golden woman in the ceremony was a wise move. She too would have liked to escape the guillotine that chopped off her head and her ideas on women’s rights in 1793.
\n– Our ancestors did not bequeath us libraries so that we scatter the pages of books and indulge in libertinism.
\n– We should avoid offending the faith of athletes and spectators alike. Imitating and revisiting the Last Supper with refreshing humor would have been acceptable, but deriding it with childish blasphemy was the option to be ruled out without hesitation.
\nFrance wants to present itself as a country of freedom in the broadest possible sense, but for many people around the world, France seems to advocate provocative libertinism rather than freedom. They are shocked and saddened to see that France seems to have lost the values that shaped its history.
\nLet us hope, Mr. President, that the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games will avoid such excesses.

\nF\u00e9licitations pour une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie d\u2019ouverture des Jeux olympiques qui a quitt\u00e9 les confins d\u2019un stade pour montrer la beaut\u00e9 de Paris. La ville-lumi\u00e8re a brill\u00e9 de tous ses feux. Certains moments \u00e9taient \u00e9mouvants et somptueux.
\nN\u00e9anmoins, plusieurs parties de cette c\u00e9r\u00e9monie sont \u00e0 d\u00e9plorer. Madame Anne Descamps, la directrice de la communication de Paris 2024, a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ses excuses apr\u00e8s des remontrances internationales et nationales.
\n\u2022 L\u2019id\u00e9al olympique (\u00ab plus haut, plus fort, plus vite \u2013 ensemble \u00bb) est incompatible avec une esth\u00e9tique de la d\u00e9capitation des femmes. R\u00e9cemment, la France, patrie des droits de l\u2019homme, a condamn\u00e9 toute d\u00e9capitation terroriste, encore plus apr\u00e8s la d\u00e9capitation de Samuel Paty. Abolissons toute apologie de l terreur, celle de l\u2019\u00c9tat encore plus, comme l\u2019aurait fait Robert Badinter. Le public plan\u00e9taire, souvent familial, veut c\u00e9l\u00e9brer la vie \u00e9lev\u00e9e par la flamme et non pas raccourcie par le fer. Honorer Olympe de Gouges comme une femme en or dans la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie \u00e9tait judicieux. Elle aussi e\u00fbt aim\u00e9 \u00e9chapper \u00e0 la guillotine qui trancha sa t\u00eate et ses id\u00e9es sur les droits des femmes en 1793.
\n\u2022 Nos anc\u00eatres ne nous ont pas l\u00e9gu\u00e9 des biblioth\u00e8ques pour \u00e9parpiller les pages des livres et s’adonner au libertinage.
\n\u2022 On \u00e9vite d\u2019offenser la foi des athl\u00e8tes et des spectateurs. Imiter et revisiter la C\u00e8ne avec un humour rafra\u00eechissant aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 acceptable, la tourner en d\u00e9rision par des blasph\u00e8mes infantiles \u00e9tait l\u2019option \u00e0 \u00e9carter sans h\u00e9sitation.
\nLa France veut se pr\u00e9senter comme un pays de libert\u00e9 dans le sens le plus large possible, mais pour de nombreux peuples du monde, la France semble pr\u00f4ner davantage le libertinage provoquant que la libert\u00e9. Ils sont choqu\u00e9s et attrist\u00e9s de voir que la France semble avoir perdu les valeurs qui ont construit son histoire.
\nEsp\u00e9rons, Monsieur le Pr\u00e9sident, que la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de cl\u00f4ture des Jeux olympiques \u00e9vitera de tels exc\u00e8s.
